Tinctures, Topicals, and Other Ways to Use Cannabis without Getting High

Many potential medical cannabis patients have shied away from cannabis use because they are opposed to getting (or would just rather not get) ‘high’. Others use cannabis in the evenings or at night, but feel they cannot medicate during the day because they have responsibilities requiring a clear head. These are entirely legitimate concerns, but using medical marijuana doesn’t have to get you ‘stoned’.

There are several ways a person can use cannabis to help treat their condition with minimal psychoactive effects or no psychoactive effects at all. Perhaps the most common way is by using products that contain CBD (cannabidiol) and not THC, but there are also full spectrum products that can be used without getting you high. The active psychoactive ingredient (delta-9 THC) only becomes psychoactive after being decarboxylated (or heated up). This means that using the plant without cooking or burning it—by juicing it, for instance—allows you to benefit from THC (or THC-A, delta-9’s precursor) without getting high.

The most common ways of using cannabis without psychoactive effects are tinctures and topicals, which most distributors now carry. We ourselves have several different varieties of each. Other methods include transdermal patches, juicing, and suppositories (with suppositories cannabinoids get absorbed directly into the blood stream without being metabolized by the liver, thereby getting rid of or significantly reducing psychoactive effects). Finding juiced cannabis and suppositories can be quite difficult. Juiced cannabis has a very short shelf life, and suppositories are off-putting to many, but you can find recipes to make your own online easily.
